I had two impulses when I finished reading Leonard Felder’s wise book, More Fully Alive, about using Jewish wisdom to cope with life’s inevitable stress. The first was to start over and read it again, this time to write 5x8 cards, one for each of the phrases that come from Jewish sacred literature, and post them around my house as reminders of words I can tell myself to help cope with the everyday challenges that make me tense, fearful, or unduly fatigued. The second impulse is to make a list of friends to whom I will give copies of the book as a support for getting them through current illness, illness of a spouse, job dissatisfaction, or complicated social circumstances. Dr. Felder writes like a good friend speaking to the reader in words and concepts we can readily understand, and using ancient and modern sources that have proved the test of time. His book demonstrates once again, that the ancient Jewish rabbis, scholars and writers had a deep understanding of human psychology, and left us ample tools for coping with challenges that are part of being human and living in an age like no other.Product details

More Fully Alive The Benefits of Using Jewish Wisdom for Responding to Stress and Overload edition by Leonard Felder SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
I bought a copy of More Fully Alive and gave it to a friend who is exploring spiritual teachings from diverse backgrounds. What a great response I got. My friend wrote me a thank you note about how much this practical, insightful book inspired her in her personal life and also opened her up to the depth and usefulness of Jewish wisdom. I had read books by Dr. Felder before and enjoyed his accessible, caring, non-dogmatic style. But this new book is especially wonderful. He shows how to lovingly get through fearful thoughts and how to deal more mindfully with extremely-stressful moments, and also how to get centered and creative when you're having a crucial conversation with a challenging family member or colleague. I recommend this book for both affiliated Jews and non-affiliated Jews, and also for anyone from any background who wants to discover the rich and profound wisdom that comes from the best of Jewish sources.
Dr. Felder's gentle genius taught me to apply the Hebrew Bible to my everyday life. I've been studying the biblical text underlying some of these principles at seminary this semester, and Dr. Felder's work dovetailed beautifully with my studies, bringing Judaism to life, and integrating its precepts into my very breath. I look forward to exploring more of his books. He is a welcome guest in my mind and heart.
This book is for all of the mothers and caretakers who have been the glue of their families and extended families. Doing and doing and doing some more. As someone who has grown accustomed to meeting the needs of others, it was comforting to read how I can take the moments I need for me. I didn't realize there were ways to do this without dropping the ball and disappointing the people I love. As it turns out--there is a way. I have tried some of these suggestions. Like taking a breath and thinking about how good that breath is--right in the middle of everything and everyone. I will keep this book handy for the reminders.
This book is lovely. It reminded me of a song that long ago had been part of my life. I recall a teacher at my school with the most beautiful voice, singing those words “Kol Ha-olam Kulo” on special occasions. At those moments I loved hearing the song but didn't really pay close attention to how it could enter my life then or now. . . and give me more courage and strength on a day to day basis. After reading Dr. Felder’s book, I've been singing it to myself at least 2 or 3 times a day. . . and it is like having a companion as I cross this skinny, flimsy bridge of life.
Chapter 4 really resonated with me. In fact, the Hebrew phrases throughout the book, I am now looking at with fresh eyes and finding myself whispering these words too.
I am grateful for More Fully Alive – it is a poignant guide, filled with humor and insight.
