Revered as a true gothic masterpiece, "Melmoth the Wanderer" is the last complete work by the Irish author and playwright, Charles Maturin. Since its publication in 1820 it has been admired by such authors as Sir Walter Scott, Honoré de Balzac, Edgar Allan Poe, and Maturin's great nephew, Oscar Wilde. In this story of temptation, villainy, and a satanic bargain for immortality, Maturin offers his social commentary on early nineteenth century England and unabashedly attacks Roman Catholicism. The Wanderer, having engaged in a pact with the devil in exchange for extended life, is doomed to a tortured existence searching for someone to take on his Satanic contract, allowing him to die a natural death. Although Melmoth epitomizes the Faustian figure, Maturin creates a singularly unique character with the added complexities of sympathy, love, and conscience, and secures this cryptic portrayal of evil a place in literary history as the quintessential Gothic novel.

Melmoth can be a struggle to read through at times. Most of the narrative comes from the mouth of one character, but even his narrative is a jumble of stories within stories that would take a carefully constructed diagram to show all the novel's proper storytellers. The main narrative suffers as a result, and the length is generally too much. Moreover, modern readers will be unable to fathom the depth of Maturin's enmity towards Catholicism and preference for Protestantism as he was using it for purposes of Irish nationalism. The attacks on Catholic practices and the Spanish Inquisition are far from our concerns today, Gothic or not. But in any event, there is something in the character of Melmoth that is worth reading on for. There is something in him that reminds the reader of Faust, who also sold his soul in exchange for something that many of us crave. And the horror that Melmoth's interlocutors feel when they realize the truth of what he wants them to do is palpable, and perhaps that is the reason why this novel stands as a classic of both the Gothic genre and the supernatural tale.Product details
