Inside Cuban Cigars eBook Tabakmann Reviews
When I first saw this title I thought it was just another book about Cuban cigars by someone that was just another wannabe; but when I saw who wrote it I remembered this gentleman as an old poster on the Cigar Aficionado Cuban forum. He was kind enough to share some valuable knowledge with the members there and now has made even more of his vast experiences available to everyone in the world. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Cuba and/or Cuban cigar history. 5 stars from me!!!!
This is a book that covers all the important details yet is very accessible and easy to read. Highly recommended!
Very informative.
This is a great book if you collect vintage Cuban Cigars. It will give you all the required details to spot a fraud / fake, and some good information on the whole process of making a cigar.
Good to the last page. I should have read more. I'll read more later. Idon' t like being made to write a finite number of words.
This is very light weight in its scope. Going to the Habanos web site will provide you with so much more on the subject.
There is, I grant you, a lot to read on box stamps, the names of the different style of cigar boxes, date coding. He covers to some degree the hybridization of the tobacco strains and possibly insinuates that the post-millenium Cuban cigar trade may be suffering from homogenization, but because he does not get into any detail about the brands, this ends up being nothing but a supposition on my part.
There is no discussion at all on any of the Marca (brand name cigar) and why there is (or was) any difference, nor does he get into the various shapes, lengths and ring sizes available and what that should mean for the consumer. This means not one description of a cigar nor one rating. I know smoking a cigar is a question of individual taste, but so is eating a hunk of steak or a bowl of soggy cereal, yet many have been able to entice or repel readers through their narrative.
I love the comment he has on the process of blending the filler leaves- a process of which "very little is known, and perhaps it should stay that way." End of subject!
He writes about being beware of buying cigars that have been badly stored and then says nothing about what constitutes these characteristics or what good storage is, except little more than that he stores his cigars at 60°F and lower 60%"s RH and can prevent an outbreak of the tobacco beetle. What the heck is this beast? What are the signs of infestation and how does one protect oneself from it?
Finally some solid information on cuban tobacco and cigars. This book is clear and concise. It is refreshing to get this information without an ad agency telling me about the cigar lifestyle. Or a subjective cigar review. This book gets into the Cuban soil and cigar mechanics. Educational, enlightening and not stuffy. A great primer.
This book is a great read. Whether you are new to cigars and want to learn about the holy grail of cigars, the Cuban cigar, or a seasoned veteran of cigar smoking and want to learn another point of view, along with very fine details about growing, aging, cultivating, and history of tobacco and cigars. If you are interested in cigars, this book is a must read. Well worth the low cost and time!
